    • It is impossible to say how much on average an impaired driving charge can increase your car insurance price, but typically if you are insured with a regular insurance company they may not want to renew your policy in which case you have to go to a high risk insurance company. At that point the rate will determine on many factors including other tickets, accidents, the type of vehicle you drive, where and how much you drive. 1. Can I drive someone else’s car
    • Ask the insurance company insuring the car, but the chances are the answer will be NO. While convicted with an impaired driving charge for the minimum of 1 year (and sometimes longer) you need to have an ignition interlock system in order to drive a vehicle. If the time for the ignition interlock has now expired and you no longer require it but still have an impaired driving charge and borrow a friend’s car you can find yourself in a big trouble. Why? If there is a claim while you are driving with an impaired driving conviction, the insurance company will most likely deny the claim. The reason being is, most regular insurance companies will not insure you if you have a DUI and their rules (which are filed with the government) is that someone with a DUI conviction does not qualify to be insured with them.
  2. Do I have to tell my insurance company I was charged with a DUI?
    • YES – Here’s why – any material change to your application for car insurance needs to be described to your car insurance company. When you are applying for new insurance you have to disclose all tickets and accidents.
  3. What happens when my record gets better?
