What Insurance Does a Plumber Need in Ontario? 2026

Plumbing work carries real risk. A loose fitting, failed connection or damaged pipe can cause serious damage to a customer’s property.

The right insurance helps protect the business you have built. It can also help you meet the requirements of customers, general contractors and property managers.

This guide explains the main business insurance coverages Ontario plumbing contractors should consider in 2026.

WSIB, life insurance and critical illness insurance can also be important for many plumbing contractors, but they are outside the scope of this article. This guide focuses on insurance for your business, vehicles, tools, equipment and liability risks.

1. Commercial General Liability Insurance (CGL)

Commercial general liability insurance, for contractors usually called “CGL”, is the main insurance policy for most plumbing contractors. It can protect your business if someone says your work caused injury or damage to their property. Make sure your CGL includes products and completed operations coverage, which responds to claims arising from work you have already finished.

For example, CGL may help if:

  • A customer trips over your tools and is injured.
  • You accidentally damage a finished wall, floor or countertop while doing a repair.
  • A customer says your plumbing work caused water damage.
  • Your business is named in a lawsuit because of your work.

It can also help pay legal costs to defend a claim. Even if a claim is not proven to be your fault, legal costs can be expensive.

Note: CGL typically covers the resulting property damage (e.g., ruined drywall from a leak), but it will not cover the cost to repair your own faulty pipe or workmanship without other specific coverages if available.

2. Installation Floater

An installation floater can protect materials, fixtures and equipment that you are responsible for while they are being transported, stored or installed. This can include property owned by your customer.

For example, a plumber may pick up a high-end Toto toilet that the customer has already paid for. From the time you pick it up until it is installed, you may be responsible for it. If it is damaged in transit, an installation floater may cover that loss, depending on the policy wording and deductible.

This coverage can also be useful for expensive fixtures, boilers, pumps, piping and other materials that you are responsible for before the job is complete.

3. Tools and Equipment Insurance

Your commercial auto policy will usually not cover tools or equipment left inside your truck or van. Your liability policy also will not cover theft of your tools from a job site. Tools and equipment coverage is designed to protect your property in these situations.

Many policies cover smaller hand tools up to the total tools-and-equipment limit, with a maximum amount for each individual item. A common limit is $1,500 per item, but this can vary by insurer.

Larger or more valuable equipment usually needs to be listed separately on the policy. You may need to provide the description, make, model, serial number and value.

Coverage should be arranged for tools and equipment while they are at your shop, stored at home, in transit and at job sites. Make a proper inventory of your equipment. Tools, machines and materials built up over many years can be worth much more than people realize.

Tools and equipment can either be on an actual cash value basis or replacement cost basis. Make sure to keep proof of purchase.

4. Commercial Auto Insurance

If a vehicle is owned, leased or financed by you or your business and used for plumbing work, it should normally be insured on a commercial auto policy. Different pricing may apply if you also use the vehicle personally.

Commercial vehicles can include service vans, pickup trucks, minivans and other vehicles used to carry tools, materials or employees.

Commercial auto insurance in Ontario includes coverages such as:

  • Third-party liability, which protects you if you cause injury or damage to others
  • Mandatory accident benefits, which cover medical, rehabilitation and attendant care costs after an accident, regardless of fault

You can also add optional coverages:

  • Optional & increased accident benefits.
  • Collision, which covers damage to your vehicle in an accident
  • Comprehensive, which covers theft, fire, vandalism and other non-collision losses
  • Rental vehicle coverage, so you can keep working while your van is being repaired or replaced

A collision or stolen van can quickly stop you from working. Make sure you have enough rental-vehicle coverage after a covered loss, so you can get back on the road and continue serving clients.

To get the right coverage and price, tell your broker about every driver who has access to the vehicle, where the vehicle is kept overnight, how it is used and the furthest distance you expect to travel for work.

5. Other Important Coverages

Errors and Omissions / Professional Liability

Most plumbers mainly need strong CGL coverage. But if you provide plumbing design, drawings, specifications, technical advice or take responsibility for design decisions, you may also need professional liability insurance. This is often called errors and omissions, or E&O, insurance.

Design work should be done or reviewed by a properly qualified professional when required. If a customer or general contractor expects you to take responsibility for the design, do not assume your regular CGL policy will cover it.

Pollution Liability

Pollution coverage is important for plumbers working around older homes, sewage, chemicals, contaminated water, excavation or other environmental risks. Many plumbers have some exposure to a pollution risk which is why it is important to consider this coverage.

Standard CGL policies usually have strict pollution exclusions. Do not assume your CGL will cover a pollution-related claim. Contractors pollution liability may help with certain injury claims, property damage, cleanup costs and other costs after a covered pollution incident.

Umbrella or Excess Liability Insurance

Umbrella or excess liability insurance gives you higher liability limits. It can sit above your CGL policy and can be setup to sit above your commercial auto policy as well.

This can be a good idea if you work in larger homes, commercial properties, condominiums or on higher-value projects. It can help when a serious water-loss claim or major auto accident is larger than the limit on your main policy.

Be Clear About Your Plumbing Work

It is very important to clearly explain what kind of plumbing work you do. “Plumber” can mean simple service calls in homes, but it can also mean new construction, high-rise work, underground work, drain cleaning, heating systems, sprinkler work, gas work or commercial projects.

When applying for insurance, be ready to explain:

  • How much of your work is residential, commercial, industrial or condominium work
  • Whether you do service calls, repairs, renovations or new construction
  • Whether you work in occupied high-rises, apartment buildings or condominiums
  • Whether you do drain cleaning, sewer, excavation, underground, septic or backflow work
  • Whether you work on hydronic heating, sprinklers or gas systems
  • Whether you provide design, drawings or technical advice
  • The size and value of your usual projects
  • Whether you use employees or subcontractors

Giving clear information helps your broker find an insurer that understands your business. It can also help prevent restrictions or coverage problems after a loss.

There are other coverages and endorsements that may be useful depending on your work, contracts, employees and equipment. Review your business with an insurance broker to make sure your coverage fits the work you do.
