As of July 1, 2026, Income Replacement is an optional Accident Benefit in Ontario.
| Income Replacement | How It Is Calculated | Coverage Options |
|---|---|---|
| Helps replace employment or self-employment income lost because of accident-related injuries. | Generally 70% of gross income, subject to eligibility and the maximum weekly limit selected. | Weekly limits of $400, $600, $800 or $1,000 are available. |
Your actual Income Replacement Benefit is based on your income and eligibility. Selecting a $1,000 weekly limit does not mean you will automatically receive $1,000 per week—the benefit remains tied to your income calculation.
Example: A construction worker is unable to work after suffering a serious back injury in an automobile accident. Their Income Replacement Benefit provides weekly payments to help replace a portion of their lost income while they recover and are unable to return to work.
Who May Qualify for Income Replacement?
Income Replacement can apply to eligible insured persons who were working before the accident and whose accident-related injuries prevent them from performing the essential tasks of their employment.
The benefit can also apply in certain circumstances involving self-employment and recent employment history, subject to the eligibility requirements and applicable policy terms.
Should You Purchase Income Replacement Coverage?
Yes. If you rely on your income to support yourself or your family, we recommend purchasing Income Replacement coverage and selecting a limit that reflects your income.
An accident that prevents you from working can affect much more than your paycheque. Your mortgage or rent, household expenses and other financial obligations can continue even when your income does not.
It is coverage we hope you never need, but would want you to have if an accident leaves you unable to work.
